Accused drug lord Melvin Maycock Sr. faces conspiracy charges in connection with a $1.6 million drug seizure over the weekend.

Maycock, who is fighting extradition to Florida for his alleged role as the head of the Caribbean arm of a multinational drug smuggling gang, was arrested following the discovery of 1,257 pounds of marijuana and 435 pounds of hashish oil at a home on Blake Road Saturday morning.

Maycock, who is nicknamed Big Mel, appeared before Deputy Chief Magistrate Carolita Bethell on two counts of conspiracy to possess drugs with intent to supply.

Prosecutors allege that Maycock, 45, of Stapledon Gardens, Kevin Darville, 53, of Market Street, and Mario Roberts, 53, of Jerome Avenue, conspired to commit the offenses from April 12 to April 15, the date the drugs were seized.

Only Roberts is accused of having custody of the drugs on April 15. The men pleaded not guilty to the charges against them during an arraignment on Monday afternoon.

Roberts alleged through his lawyer Deborah Rose that police severely beat him to give a confession statement.

Roger Gomez Jr, who appeared for Maycock and Darville, asked for the conspiracy case to be heard separately from the drug possession case. He said Roberts' alleged confession was prejudicial as it was the only thing that implicated the men in the conspiracy .

Magistrate Bethell denied the request. She reminded Gomez that Roberts' alleged statement could only be used against him.

The men have been remanded into custody at Her Majesty's Prison until Wed-nesday when they return to court for a bail hearing.

Maycock is on $80,000 bail in connection with his extradition case. He also has a pending case involving the seizure of 1,250 pounds of marijuana, three guns and assorted ammunition from a home on West Bay Street.

He was required to report to the Central Police Station daily as a condition of his bail.
