Truckers guilty of importing cocaine
Truckers guilty of importing cocaine: "Two Brampton truckers were found guilty Thursday in Superior Court of importing $3.5 million worth of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking.
Jaswinder Singh Aujla, 28, and Gurminder Singh Riar, 33, were taken into custody following Superior Court Justice Gordon Thomson's verdict.
They will be sentenced Feb 7.
Federal prosecutor Richard Pollock said following the ruling he will be asking for a sentence of 15 to 18 years each for the two men.
'The verdict was called for by the evidence and sends a strong message to truckers they will be pursued, arrested and brought to justice,' Pollock said.
The length the Crown will be seeking during sentencing is based on previous cases related to cocaine importation, he said.
The truckers were caught after being sent for secondary inspection by border officers at the Ambassador Bridge on April 7, 2007. Included in the load of ice cream they'd picked up in California was nearly 38 kilograms of cocaine in two boxes."
