Livermore Lab losing track of drugs, feds say

Livermore Lab losing track of drugs, feds say: "Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory has failed to keep accurate records of dangerous drugs in its inventory, including cocaine, amphetamines, opium and black tar heroin, the federal Energy Department's inspector general said Thursday.

The lab did not keep track of at least six of the 42 controlled substances that it maintains for biomedical and forensic science research because 'officials did not devote adequate attention to developing and maintaining program accountability,' the inspector general said in a report.

Although the quantities of drugs in question are small, and there was no evidence that any substances had been misused or stolen, the discrepancies 'could create an opportunity for improper or illegal use,' the inspector general said."
